Keep America Beautiful Month – Gardening With Your Preschooler

Keep America Beautiful Month – Gardening With Your Preschooler

April is “Keep America Beautiful Month,” and what’s more beautiful than a thriving, flowering garden outdoors? Not only are gardens good for the environment, but they can provide nutrition and food sources to your family, and the care and maintenance of the garden is a perfect way to get your whole family involved in being outside and learning and engaging together.

Be Creative!

Kids love color and they love exploring. Along with the family garden, create a small garden (about 3 x 3 feet) just for your preschooler. Let them plant whatever they want and take care of it. Not only will this create a sense of ownership and autonomy, but they’ll be more likely to experiment and see how different plants grow together and affect one another.

Choose Kid-Friendly Plants!

Preschoolers are not known for being very patient, so choose seeds that will bloom quickly and be easily recognizable. Kids also love things that have unique smells and are interesting to the touch. Take a trip to your local nursery together and choose some seeds that will grow the plants that draw attention and excitement from your child.

Make it Edible!

Gardening is an excellent way to teach preschoolers that we can grow delicious and nutritious foods in our own backyards (or planters in our kitchens), and they will love harvesting edible treats like cherry tomatoes, snap peas, lettuces and radishes. This is another great learning opportunity to teach how we can preserve our planet and reduce waste by growing our own food!

Keep it FUN! As long as it’s fun, your preschooler will enjoy it. Make sure you have colorful, kid-friendly gardening tools such as spades and rakes, fun gardening hats or shoes, and creative ways to keep your garden fun, fresh, and interesting for the whole family.
