The changing season provides a wonderful backdrop for preschool learning. With a little creativity, families can turn ordinary fall moments into opportunities for children to practice early literacy, math, science, and social-emotional skills—all while enjoying hands-on activities that make learning exciting.

Collect a few fallen leaves and invite your preschooler to use them as part of an alphabet activity. You can write letters on paper leaves or use real leaves to create a simple matching game. Ask your child to identify each letter and think of a word that begins with its sound.

For younger preschoolers, focus on recognizing a few familiar letters. Older preschoolers may enjoy matching uppercase and lowercase letters or practicing beginning sounds. Keep the activity playful and celebrate your child’s effort rather than focusing on getting every answer correct.

Choose a few fall colors, such as red, orange, yellow, brown, and green. Then, take your preschooler on a walk around your neighborhood or another safe outdoor space and search for examples of each color.

Encourage your child to name what they see and compare different objects. You might ask, “Can you find something orange?” or “Which leaf is bigger?” This simple game supports color recognition, vocabulary, visual discrimination, and early comparison skills.

Fall also offers plenty of opportunities for pretend play. Invite your preschooler to imagine running a pumpkin stand, preparing a pretend harvest meal, or taking care of a stuffed animal getting ready for cooler weather. Provide open-ended materials and let your child decide how the story unfolds.

Imaginative play helps children develop communication, creativity, problem-solving, and social skills. If siblings or friends join in, encourage them to practice taking turns, sharing ideas, and working together to create their pretend world.
