December is full of excitement—but it’s also a great time to teach preschoolers that kindness is one of the most important parts of the season. A kindness calendar helps children look forward to doing something generous or thoughtful each day. It’s a fun way to build empathy and a spirit of giving in even the youngest learners.
How to Make a Kindness Calendar
Start with a large sheet of paper and draw 25 squares—one for each day leading up to the holiday you celebrate. Together with your child, fill in each square with a small act of kindness. Keep it simple, age-appropriate, and most of all, joyful! Here are a few ideas:
- Make a card for a neighbor or grandparent. Use crayons, stickers, or stamps to decorate the card with cheerful designs. Delivering it together can be a fun adventure and teach your child the joy of giving.
- Share a favorite book with a friend. Let your preschooler choose a story they love and talk about why it’s special. Reading together helps build friendships and a love for stories.
- Donate a gently used toy together. Have your child help choose a toy they no longer play with and explain how it can bring joy to another child. Visiting a donation center can turn this into a meaningful family outing.
- Say something kind to yourself in the mirror! Encourage phrases like “I am smart” or “I am kind.” This builds confidence and helps preschoolers practice positive self-talk from a young age.
Keep It Fun and Flexible
Preschoolers love stickers, so let them decorate each day as they complete it. Some families create a paper chain instead, with a kind act written on each link. Others use a felt board or even printable cards they can flip through like a countdown.
