Back to School Schedule Planning for Families with Preschoolers

Back to School Schedule Planning for Families with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Mableton, preschool, childcare, daycare

The lazy days of summer have come to an end, and the chaos of school, work, sports, and fall activities are beginning. Many parents find that planning out a schedule can make the transition from summer to fall much easier for themselves and for their preschooler.

Set Routines

Setting a routine will help your preschooler know exactly what is expected of them before and after school. Pinterest has some great checklist ideas that will help you make sure everything gets done each day! For example, create a schedule or checklist that designates times for homework, play time, dinner, bath, and bedtime routine items.

To help you stay on track, set timers or use alarms to keep everyone on task. Some great ways to use timers are to remind yourself when to transfer laundry from the washer to the dryer, putting a time limit on shopping, or helping your preschooler know when screen time is finished, or it is time to clean up the toys. This practice will help you maintain an intentional schedule.

Plan Ahead

Some preschoolers are earlier risers while others stay in bed until the last minute. Either way, for a variety of reasons, mornings often feel rushed. Help your child get everything ready the night before, including what clothes they will wear, packing a lunch, and putting their backpack together. This will help the mornings go smoother and keep you from forgetting something.

A tip for parents is to plan out your week before it even begins! Plan what meals you are going to prepare, grocery shop, and possibly even do some meal prep on the weekends. The same is true for activities or events. Do not wait until the last minute to get the snack for class or wash the uniform for the soccer game. Do what you can on the weekends to lighten your load during the week.

Create Spaces

Create designated places for your preschooler to put their school things, shoes, or sports equipment. So much time is lost searching for something when you are trying to get out the door. Designating a study area away from toys and technology can help them get school or homework work done more quickly and without distractions. Everything will not always go smoothly, but consistency is the key to developing a schedule.
