Teaching Your Preschooler Thankfulness

Teaching Your Preschooler Thankfulness at Kids 'R' Kids Mableton, preschool, daycare, childcare

The Thanksgiving season is upon us. Of course, this means an upcoming large (and yummy meal), but it is also the ideal time to teach your preschooler thankfulness through specific modeling. Here are a few ideas to try this season.

A Turkey Craft

Print out a decently-sized black and white turkey template and turkey-sized feathers (or hand draw these). You and your preschooler can think of things for which you are both thankful. Write these “thankful” ideas on to the different turkey feathers and glue them on the turkey template. Once finished, hang this craft where you desire.

A Thankful Jar

Find a jar that your preschooler can decorate in fall colors. Throughout the month of November, you and your child can give ideas for which you are thankful. You can write them down on small pieces of paper for your child to put in the jar. At the end of the month (or on Thanksgiving), you can read aloud the different ideas.

Categories of Thankfulness

Choose three categories of workers to discuss with your child. (Examples are grocery store workers, library workers, mail delivery drivers, etc.) Encourage your child to draw a picture to give someone from each of your three chosen categories to show them appreciation during November. If your preschooler is outgoing, instead of drawing pictures, you and your child can go up to someone in these chosen categories for your child to thank them in person.

Proactive Thankfulness

Before Thanksgiving, you and your child can make small goodie bags to give out to people you appreciate and know you will encounter sometime in November. These can be simple goodies, nothing expensive. Your child can then hand these out, while the recipients can enjoy the special treat.

It would be stressful for anyone to do all these ideas, while also gearing up for Thanksgiving festivities. Hopefully, these ideas can be a diving board to get your creative juices flowing for how to model thankfulness this month.
