Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits at Kids 'R'Kids Mableton, preschool, daycare, childcare

Sleep is important for the whole family. Yet, if your preschooler is sleep-deprived, it can cause tension for the whole family. Here are a few tips to help your child develop healthy sleep habits, for everyone’s sake!

Routine, routine!

It is recommended that your preschooler have 10-13 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. One key to set your child up for success on the front end is a consistent routine. Does your preschooler like you to read books before bed or perhaps listen to gentle music? Is there a favorite teeth-brushing song? The goal is to get your child in bed in a relaxed state. A calming and consistent evening routine sets you up for success. Each family’s routine will look different, but choose what works for your family.

Dealing with Escapees!

If your preschooler likes to get out of bed once bedtime starts, be consistent with your game plan. Chances are that your preschooler is stalling the inevitable (sleep!) or may be trying to get your attention at the wrong time. If they get out of bed, calmly walk them back to their bed and leave without any dramatics. This makes leaving the bed much less fun for your child, which is a positive thing!

Follow Your Gut

If you are worried about your preschooler’s sleep patterns, the Cleveland Clinic recommends you see your child’s pediatrician for reasons such as: your preschooler snores or makes too much noise while sleeping, has an unexpected amount of nighttime wake-ups, or if there are too many daytime emotional problems with your child.

Sleep should be a priority. There are many benefits for your preschooler to be well-rested. One is that emotions are more easily controlled. Better yet, learning can more effectively take place for the child who has enough sleep. Reach out for help as necessary, though! Sleep problems are not ideal, but you are not alone if there are struggles! Be consistent with doing the right things, and it will all click one day with your child.
