Making Chores Fun For Preschoolers!

Making Chores Fun For Preschoolers!

If your family situation means that the kids are home much more often during the week over the summer vacation, it’s inevitable that chores will become part of the daily routine. Don’t you dare do them all yourself! Make chores a family affair and get your preschoolers excited about helping with mundane activities that will keep them occupied and get the house cleaned up.

Summertime is a great opportunity to start introducing your preschooler to everyday chores that they have sole responsibility for taking care of. When they start sorting their own laundry into baskets or putting away their toys by themselves once they’re done playing with them, or even scooping the pet’s food every morning, they will build a routine you can continue even after school starts. You can make this fun at first, but emphasize that everyone in the family helps out, and this is how they contribute, even when it stops being “fun” or exciting!

Here are some other ways to make chores less of a chore:

  • Preschoolers love a challenge or a race. Hide small treats or pennies to find when they are dusting/cleaning up, or set a timer and see who can pick up toys the fastest.
  • Chore charts – with stickers. The child with most stickers at the end of the week gets recognized for being “The Biggest Helper”!
  • Music or podcasts. Play some family friendly podcasts or a favorite playlist to get your groove on while you all help clean up.
  • Make big house-cleaning days a family event! Make a “Chores Bingo” bored and whomever gets a Bingo first wins a treat!

It’s up to you whether you want to use allowance as a selling point, but remember that kids this age just love being praised and feeling important! Small treats are fine, too!
