Earth Day is April 22nd,, and no child is too young to learn how to love our planet! As spring blossoms and blooms, go outside with preschool-age kids and start to notice and observe all of the beautiful parts of our planet. Make it a game by creating a printout of a scavenger hunt, and check off boxes when you find flowers, rocks, grass, trees, and other fun items in nature. Be sure to recycle the paper when you’re finished!
Here are some great ideas for introducing Earth Day to kids:
Read to your preschooler about ways they can help the planet. Visit your local library and ask about Earth Day reading for kids. Early in April, call the library and ask about an Earth Day display in the children’s section. This list online is a great start to find some titles on your own!
Recycling is an easy way to take care of Earth. Include young children in homes and preschools in this practice by setting up recycling centers. Make bins for plastic, paper, and cardboard, and work together to reduce waste!
Reuse recyclable materials in craft projects. A quick Pinterest search for “Earth Day crafts” will result in dozens of great ideas. The possibilities are endless, but some quick ideas include making bird feeders out of milk cartons, hanging planters from washed and painted tin cans, and making spring flowers from egg cartons or bottle caps.
Recognize the Earth! Create beautiful blue and green art projects that look like our planet. A coffee filter Earth is a fun and beautiful craft, or reduce waste even more by making an edible Earth out of green grapes and blueberries, and then enjoy for snack time!
