Teaching Preschoolers about Thanksgiving

thanksgiving story

Most of us grew up learning about Thanksgiving the same way: we were taught that the Pilgrims came to America on the Mayflower and shared a meal with the Native Americans already living here. We dressed up in Pilgrim hats or Native American headdresses made out of construction paper and made handprint turkeys as crafts. There are many new ways to talk about Thanksgiving and giving thanks in general with your preschooler this season.

Gratitude Around the Globe

The U.S. is not the only country that celebrates Thanksgiving! Visit your local library to find books about how other countries and cultures celebrate gratitude and talk about how they’re different from what we do and what we cook to celebrate this holiday.

What’s a Pilgrim?

Our preschoolers look so cute in their construction paper Pilgrim hats, but what if they ask you what a Pilgrim is? Talk with your child about how Pilgrims were looking for freedom and a better life, and incorporate this into a conversation about gratitude for all the privileges you and your family enjoy.

Native American History

Some schools may default to a standard feather headdress and face paint for Thanksgiving costumes. Encourage your child and your preschool teachers to research the dress, food, and customs of the tribes local to your area of the country and learn about what they looked like and how they lived!

Focus on More than Food

Take the opportunity while shopping for all the ingredients for yummy Thanksgiving dishes to talk to your preschooler about how grateful you all are to be able to shop for and eat such yummy food. Take a moment to pick out some canned goods and other items to donate to a local shelter who provides food for others on Thanksgiving!
