Setting Goals with Your Preschooler

setting goals

Goal setting is not just for adults. Did you know your preschooler can also benefit from an effective goal setting session? Now that the school year has started, it’s the perfect time to spend a few minutes of focused time putting together a few goals for your child. Here are some areas to focus on:

Service:

Set goals for your child to help serve at a local charity. During the holidays pick out a child from an Angel Tree and allow your preschooler to help pick out gifts for the child. Have your child help pack up clothes and explain the reasons for helping.

Family:

Is your preschooler ready to help out at home? It may take a little extra patience to learn to complete chores, but let them take responsibility for completing that task. Or make it a goal for your child to spend quality one-on-one time with family members.

Physical:

If you’ve noticed that your child needs improvement in gross-motor skills, set time to sign your child up for a sport: swim lessons, soccer, dancing, or baseball. They will work on coordination and listening to a coach!

Social:

If you notice your preschooler having trouble taking turns with other children, set a goal to help him. Play games at home and make it a priority to help him understand when it’s someone else’s turn during an activity. Hopefully those lessons at home are transferring over to playtime with others in preschool!

Mental & Emotional:

For mental and emotional goals, help your child learn to process their emotions or practice learning to calm down. Plan to help your little one by talking through their frustration and what they are feeling. For additional mental skills, set time aside for extra reading time or helping them learn a new skill (drawing, learning colors, building with Legos).

You will love recognizing the progress your child makes working on their goals! Use the beginning of the school year to establish new goals for your child and review them again before the second semester.
