What to Look for in a Preschool

choosing a preschool

It’s one of the first decisions you’ll make in your child’s education: where will he or she go to preschool? Don’t take this decision lightly. Since this will be your child’s first impression of schooling, you want to make sure you get it right. Here are three tips for choosing a preschool that is best for your family.

How are the reviews?

In a highly digital world, it’s easier than ever to share information and ideas with others on the internet. Use this tool when researching a preschool and check their reviews. Take note, however, that just as is the case with some hotels and restaurants, sometimes the only people who leave reviews are the angry ones. If you check reviews on Yelp or Facebook, most of the people who post will be people who had enough of a profound experience there that they were moved to seek out the review site to leave their thoughts. Be sure, as well, to check the Google review, since Google often requests reviews from people it notices visited certain businesses based on its location detection. This can give you a much more standard review. You should also never hesitate to ask the school for references. Be sure to check out Kids ‘R’ Kids’ extensive video testimonials from parents just like you!

What are the school’s policies?

Since many preschools host open houses, be sure to ask any and all questions you may have. Here are a few to get you started: Do children nap regularly? How do you handle discipline? Is potty training required? Are meals and snacks provided? What is the daily schedule? Think ahead about what you need to know to make your child most comfortable. On the Kids ‘R’ Kids website, check the “About Us” dropdown menu for information regarding our philosophy, curriculum and other policies.

Did you ask about curriculum?

Each school might have a different approach to how they teach, but it’s important that they challenge your preschooler academically, socially and emotionally. Schools that incorporate advanced technology, various extracurricular activities, and hands-on learning will prepare your child for kindergarten while incorporating plenty of fun!

What does your child think?

Last but not least, keep communication open with your child. When visiting an open house, make sure you spend enough time hanging out to get a reaction from your soon-to-be preschooler. He or she will be able to tell you their thoughts on the atmosphere and look of the building. Is it warm and inviting or cold and institutional? One of the most important factors is making sure your child feels comfortable and ready to learn.

There are countless factors to consider when looking for the right preschool. Use our Comparison Checklist to cover all of your bases and make the right decision for you and your family!
