Science Experiments for Preschoolers

Science Experiments for Preschoolers

As parents, we are always looking for educational ways to entertain our preschoolers when they are bored. These science experiments are the perfect solution because they are easy to do, fascinating for your child, and you might even have all the supplies at home already!

Cleaning Pennies

Send your child on a hunt for the dirtiest pennies they can find in the house! Then, create a solution of ¼ cup warmed vinegar and a teaspoon of salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved. Have your preschooler drop the pennies into the solution, wait five minutes, and then fish out the pennies, drying them with a paper towel. The pennies will be cleaner and brighter than before because of the acid in the vinegar. Repeat the process to see how shiny you can get the pennies, or try other acidic ingredients such as lemon juice instead of vinegar, or even ketchup!

How Clouds Make Rain

For this weather-themed experiment, you’ll need a jar or clear cup, shaving cream, and blue food coloring. First, have your child fill the cup with water, representing the air. Then, create the clouds by adding shaving cream on top of the water. Finally, add blue food coloring on top of the cloud until it starts to break through the cloud! This demonstrates to your child what happens when the water gets heavy in the clouds – it rains!

Skittles Rainbow

This experiment might be our favorite, because you get to eat the leftovers! Find a plate that has a lip or a round Tupperware container and have your child place skittles all around the edge. This might take some time depending on the size of your dish, so encourage your child to be creative with the colors. They could make an alternating pattern or put all of the same colored skittles next to each other. Then, carefully pour water into the center of the dish until it reaches the skittles and then watch the magic happen!

Give these science experiments a try the next time it rains or your preschoolers complains of boredom! They’ll be talking about the cool things they did (and learned!) for weeks to come.
