Teaching Preschoolers about Thanksgiving

teaching preschoolers about thanksgiving

There are so many ways to teach preschoolers about the first Thanksgiving, the history, and why we celebrate this holiday. As we approach this holiday, start thinking of new ways to talk to your preschooler about Thanksgiving beyond construction paper pilgrim hats and Native American headdresses.

Gratitude Around the Globe

So many cultures have a special holiday and traditions to celebrate gratitude and thankfulness! Visit your local library to find books about how and when other countries and cultures celebrate Thanksgiving and talk with your preschooler about how they’re different from how we celebrate.

What’s a Pilgrim?

If your school does create Pilgrim costumes, ask your preschooler if they know what a Pilgrim is! Talk with your child about how Pilgrims were looking for freedom and a better life, and incorporate this into a conversation about gratitude for all the privileges you and your family enjoy.

Native American History

If feathered headdresses and face paint are included in the celebratory First Thanksgiving costumes, encourage your child and your preschool teachers to research the dress, food, and customs of the tribes local to your area of the country and learn about what they looked like and how they lived!

Focus on More than Food

While you’re out shopping for ingredients for your favorite Thanksgiving dishes, talk to your preschooler about how grateful you all are to be able to shop for and eat such yummy food. If you can, pick out some canned goods and other items to donate to a local shelter who provides food for others on Thanksgiving and go make the donation with your preschooler!
