Paying it Forward This Thanksgiving

Paying it Forward this Thanksgiving

During this season of gratitude, help your preschooler understand the importance of giving to the community. These special acts of charity, called “paying it forward,” will build generosity and gratitude in your child. Here are a few ways you can help pay it forward in your community:

Be a good neighbor.

Make it a point this month to be a good neighbor at home. Along with your family, offer to help one of your older neighbors with their yard, or a project in their house. Young kids can help pull weeds or pick up small, fallen branches. You could make a meal with your child and deliver it to a neighbor with a hand drawn card to bring a smile!

Give to a food drive.

There are many area food drives that take place: a local food bank, your neighborhood grocery store, etc. Pick up extra canned goods and share with your child why you are delivering food to the food bank. Your preschooler can help deliver the goods and carry light items into the food bank.

Adopt a Salvation Army angel.

Many Angel Trees begin setting up this month. Allow your preschooler to help choose an angel and then take her with you to shop for their needs. Your child will begin to understand that other children don’t have enough and you are helping them have a special holiday with their family.

Bring them along.

If you already volunteer and serve in a charity or ministry, take your preschooler along with you. Allow your child to see how you spend your time giving back in the community. Young children can help with small projects, carrying items, greeting guests, and even cooking!

When we share these experiences with our preschoolers, it helps give them a better understanding of the community in which we live. When parents model kindness and generosity, children will model those acts and it builds their own strong character!
