Screen Free Ways to Engage Preschoolers on the Go

Screen Free Ways to Engage Preschoolers on the Go at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

We’ve all been there…driving down the road for an extended time, waiting in line at the grocery store for what seems like hours, sitting in a waiting room for an eternity.  Your toddler is bored and complaining.  What do you do? Hand them your smartphone or tablet? NO!  Keep reading to gain some screen free ideas to pass your time away from home.

There are currently many great activities that can keep your kids occupied with minimal pieces to keep track of.  Things like travel Bingo, Magna Doodle, busy books, felt pictures, and on-level skills practice books are great for use in the car and are readily available at dollar stores and even Target’s dollar spot.  “Water Wow!” books are a bit more expensive, but they are fun for kids with little to no mess involved and can be used multiple times.  If you are looking for ways to expand your child’s imagination, you can find age-appropriate audio books, or podcasts with stories and songs for him to listen to while riding around with you.  Some of these suggested activities would also be great for situations such as waiting at a doctor’s office or a restaurant.

If you would like to engage with your child in the vehicle or have your children engage with each other more, try teaching them some on-the-go games.  “I Spy” is a simple and fun guessing game.  Older preschoolers might enjoy playing a game of “20 Questions.”  You could look for license plates from different states while driving or play the ABC game anywhere (this is where you start with the letter A and look for each letter of the alphabet on signs around you).

Don’t be afraid to ditch the screens when you are out and about.  Be creative and make your waiting time fun.  Try some of these suggestions or create your own games together!
