Gardening with Your Preschooler

Gardening with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Getting your preschooler involved in gardening is a great way to introduce them to different vegetables, herbs, or fruits in a fun way. Here are a few gardening tips for you and your preschooler, including what you should plant and how to set up a garden.

What to Plant?

Check your growing zone or talk to someone at a local nursery to get advice about what grows well in your specific area. Choose herbs, vegetables, or fruits that are edible so there is less to worry about if your preschooler tries to eat one of them. Choose durable plants that need little maintenance as they grow. You want your preschooler to be able to fully participate, so keep things simple. You may want to start from a seed, but this takes a little more preparation on your part before they can be planted. Many first-time gardeners choose to purchase seedlings from a nursery or farmer that can go directly into the soil.

Which Tools?

You may need some containers or raised beds if you are going that route with your garden. Container gardening is great for all levels of gardening, especially beginners, and it does not have to tear up your yard or take up too much space.

You do not need much to be a successful gardener. Gardening gloves, a watering can, and a spade are the most common things you will need. Purchasing a gardening set geared for preschoolers may be more fun for your child to have their own set of tools.

How to Grow?

Start small to avoid being overwhelmed. You may only want to choose two or three things to plant to start. Let the kids get dirty! They can till the soil, plant the seeds, water, and weed. Gardening is a great avenue for all types of kinesthetic, tactile and visual learning. Not to mention, it also teaches responsibility and builds their self-confidence. Supervise daily watering, so they do not over-water their plants.

Now, you can sit back with patience, watch, and wait for your hard work to pay off. Eventually, you and your preschooler should be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor!
