Age-Appropriate Skills to Teach Your Preschooler

Age-Appropriate Skills to Teach Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Preschoolers are at an age where their minds and bodies are both developing rapidly.  They are also more open to learning new things during this phase.  So, how can you take advantage of that?  What are some important skills that your toddler can begin to master?

Social Skills

Preschoolers need to learn how to socialize with other people.  Manners are a big part of that.  Modeling correct behavior is often the best form of teaching.  Saying Please, Thank you, You’re welcome, and Excuse me at appropriate times shows respect for others.  Other ways to show respect are by listening and following directions.  Preschoolers also need to learn how to wait their turn, share, and cooperate with others.

Physical Skills

Sometimes physical skills can be a lot more fun to teach and learn, but they can also be frustrating if it just is not coming easily to your preschooler.  Let your child learn at their pace instead of pushing the skills too quickly. Some physical skills to practice are climbing stairs with alternate feet, jumping off low steps or objects, beginning to pump when swinging, balancing on one foot, and pedaling a trike or bike.

Grooming Skills

Preschoolers are well known for coming up with their own unique styles! No matter what look they are going for, there are certain personal grooming habits they can form.  Preschoolers should be brushing their teeth with help, getting themselves dressed (other than some pesky buttons and belts and things of that sort), brushing their hair with assistance, washing their hands with soap and water, and doing most of their potty business unassisted.

Family Skills

Family skills is just a fancy way of saying chores.  Kids usually love being asked to help with “grown up” chores.  From the time children are small, they can and should be taught to contribute to the household.  They can do things such as making their bed, putting toys away, helping set or clear the table, picking up crumbs after meals, and helping with the laundry.

No matter what skill you are trying to develop in your preschooler, remember to be patient and praise them for their progress.  You are their number one cheerleader!
