Teaching Your Preschooler about Independence Day

Independence Day

The 4th of July is such a fun, memorable, and exciting holiday for children! Most of us have very distinct and detailed memories of celebrating this day during our childhood, and it’s a great joy to re-experience Independence Day through the eyes of your child! Before you enjoy fireworks and hot dogs and swimming pools, take some time leading up to this day to teach your preschooler the why of Independence Day and our celebrations! We’ve compiled some easy ways to teach your preschool-age children more about this patriotic holiday.

Teach the History

Young children have a short attention span, so hold off on reading the Declaration of Independence together. However, you can absolutely tell the story of how America was formed by people who wanted to start a new life in a new country and not be ruled by a King. There are some children’s books for all ages that feature some of the key players in America’s independence. Visit your local library to find books that teach about our independence in child-friendly language.

Explain our Government

Once again, keep this simple and age and attention span appropriate! First, ask your child what they know! It may be more than you think. Teach the names of the three branches of our government and how that is very different from having a King or a Queen. Talk about how we have a President, but how the other branches make sure nobody gets too powerful!

Keep it Fun

Look online for examples of American Flag crafts that are fun to do but easy to teach about the parts of the flag and what they represent. Learn and sing some patriotic songs together as you do the craft (“You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land is My Land” are great examples!)
