Pet Ideas for Preschoolers

Pet Ideas for Preschoolers

Preschool children are at that great age when they’re finally starting to make memories and experience the world in a way that will shape their entire life. Choosing to introduce a pet into the equation can have a huge impact on a child’s life, but you have to make sure you’re choosing a pet that will mesh well with your preschooler. Which of these would be the best choice for your child?

Dogs

Dogs are active and social, but energy levels, personality, and temperaments can vary by breed. This makes choosing a dog one of the more exciting options when considering a pet, however you must take the time to research which breed is most compatible with your family and your preschooler. Larger dogs require more space and have the potential to be intimidating in certain situations, but smaller dogs sometimes come with additional health maintenance due to their breeding. Some dogs do well living mostly indoors while others need a lot of space to run and play outside.

Cats

Looking for an independent, quiet animal that doesn’t take up as much space or responsibility? A cat might be right for your preschooler. You can count on a cat to be a furry friend of your kid that won’t be nearly as loud as a dog, but cats do tend to need their own personal space. Additionally, allergies can really play a part in this particular animal.

Hamsters or Fish

These two seemingly different animals are grouped together for a few interesting reasons. Yes, hamsters are cuddlier than fish (for obvious reasons), but both animals are relatively low-maintenance and take up a lot less space than their larger counterparts. They are great choices for parents and caregivers with hectic schedules. Cages and tanks/fish bowls need to be cleaned on a weekly basis. Additionally, since hamsters and fish tend to have shorter lifespans, you may have to address the loss of a pet with your preschooler sooner than later.

Pets That Require Attention

Outside of wild animals, no pet deserves to be discouraged from adoption. However, there are some pets that might not always be right for preschool-age children and require some additional consideration. Ferrets are funky-looking mammals that may be appealing to younger kids from an aesthetic point-of-view, but their personalities can sometimes be on the wilder, more mischievous side, and without constant maintenance, their habitat can really begin to stink. Turtles are a great option for the right family, but remember that even though they require less grooming and food, their habitat (including temperature and light) must be just right. Additionally, some states prohibit the keeping of turtles, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discourages turtles for children under the age of five, because the animals can spread salmonella.

Take the time to do all the research possible when choosing a pet for your preschooler. In addition, don’t surprise your child with the pet. Give them time to go and visit the pet before signing the papers, just to make sure they mesh well. With the right amount of care and research, your furry friend can find a home.
