Being a Good Team Player

Being a Good Team Player

Up to a certain point in their lives, children have been the center of their universe. It naturally will come as a shock to find out that this is not reality! But learning how to be a good team player and work together toward a goal is a skill that, when taught early on, will help them for the rest of their academic careers and their lives and relationships.

Here are a few simple and easy-to-remember fundamentals that every preschooler and their parents can work on every day in various ways to become a great team player:

It’s not all about you

Focusing on the other members of any group is the best way to start having an attitude of teamwork. Encourage your child to think of a whole forest of trees, and how no one tree is more important than another, and that it takes all of the trees to make the forest! Try “It’s about the trees, not the me’s!”

Take responsibility

Nobody likes to make mistakes. Children may tend to place blame on others so as not to disappoint their parents or teachers. It’s very important to teach a child that making mistakes is a normal, completely okay part of learning new things. Learning to admit, acknowledge, and move on from a mistake is a crucial part of working as a team.

Enjoy the process

Finishing a project or a game together as part of a team is so much more rewarding than completing any task alone! Teach your child to enjoy and acknowledge all of the roles and steps it takes to finish a task and to encourage teammates and family members along the way. It’s more fun doing it together!
