If you have a preschooler, you’re likely familiar with the unique challenges of teaching social skills to young children. From learning to share and make friends to cooperating with adults, social skills are an essential part of preschoolers’ development. Social skills are the behaviors that help children become successful in life! They include cooperation, using good manners, understanding a person’s feelings, and being able to resolve conflicts peacefully.
Teaching social skills to preschoolers can be difficult, as they often don’t understand why they need to behave in a certain way. To help your preschooler develop social skills, it’s important to be patient and consistent.
Model the behavior you want to see in your preschooler.
When preschoolers see adults behaving in a certain way, they are more likely to imitate it! If you want your child to be kind, show your child what kindness looks like.
Playtime is a great way to help your preschooler practice social skills.
Through play, your preschooler can learn to take turns, cooperate, and share! You can also use stories or role-playing activities to help your child learn how to show empathy towards others.
When your preschooler misbehaves, make sure to address the behavior in a positive way.
Don’t yell or punish them, as this can discourage positive behavior! Instead, try to provide positive reinforcement and praise them when they behave in a way you want them to.
Finally, be sure to give your preschooler plenty of opportunities to practice social skills.
Encourage them to interact with other children and adults, and don’t be afraid to step in and help when needed!
With patience and guidance, your child will develop the social skills they need to be successful and make meaningful connections in the future.
