Beating the Back-to-School Blues with Your Preschooler

Beating the Back-to-School Blues with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Keller, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler may have been out of school for weeks, enjoying summer camp, or getting ready to go to school for the first time; but summer vacation is coming to an end and this often brings some sadness about starting school. It is time to get mentally ready to head back to the classroom! Here are three tips for beating the back-to-school blues your preschooler may be experiencing.

Plan a Shopping Trip

One of the quickest ways to motivate your preschooler is by going shopping before school starts. Get your child involved in the process. Get a supply list from your school and check off each item as you add it to the cart. Let them pick out a new “First Day of School” outfit, a new backpack, or a special treat! Show them that there are things to look forward to with the start of school.

Get a New Routine

If you practice your new routine, it will help you ease into a new schedule. About two weeks before school starts, begin moving bedtime back by 10 or 15 minutes every couple of days. Practice setting alarms, waking up earlier, and eating breakfast and getting out the door by a certain time. Make it a fun challenge to beat the clock! Depending on your family, there can be much to accomplish in the morning. Typically, things are less structured in the summer. Knowing what to expect can help your preschooler ease into a new school routine.

Have Some Fun

Just because summer is almost over, does not mean that you cannot still have some fun. Create a calendar of events so you can do fun activities as a family together. Celebrate the end of summer in a fun way! Whether it is a cookout with friends, a play date at the pool, or a campfire with s’mores, taking some time to mark the end of summer in a memorable way can help your preschooler prepare for the school year ahead. The fun does not have to end there though! Make a list of fall fun and mark some dates on the calendar. Look for seasonal activities at your library or in your community that you can enjoy in the evenings after school or on the weekends. If you give your preschooler something to look forward to, it helps get their mind off the sadness of summer ending.
