Independence Day Books for Preschoolers

Independence Day Books for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Keller, preschool, daycare

Chances are your preschooler has seen fireworks or participated in Fourth of July festivities, but does not know the meaning behind this holiday.  The concept of independence and the reasons for our traditions can be a difficult concept for preschoolers.  Luckily, there are plenty of fun picture books to introduce these concepts in a light-hearted fashion for your little one!

How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the U.S.A.  by Marjorie Priceman

This book will lead your preschooler on a scavenger hunt across the United States to collect the items needed to make a cherry pie.  This book will give the opportunity to discuss with your preschooler the difficulties people faced before there were stores to purchase premade items, as well as where natural resources are available in the United States.

We Came To America  by Faith Ringgold

Teaching our children about inclusion is important at any age. This book opens the opportunity to discuss with your preschooler how our great country was formed by people from every country of the world.

My Fourth of July  by Jerry Spinelli

If your family is heading out to a parade on Independence Day, read this book beforehand.  Jerry Spinelli follows a boy as he joins in the parade and enjoys a day of Independence Day traditions with his family.

The Night Before the Fourth of July  by Natasha Wing

Preschoolers love rhyming books and they are great for building reading skills.  The Night Before the Fourth of July is a fun rhyming book that follows a family as they attend a parade and enjoy some holiday traditions.  This is a great book to introduce some of our country’s traditions to a preschooler who is experiencing them for the first time.

Independence Day  by Ann Heinrichs

Teach your preschooler the struggles of claiming our independence.  This book includes engaging text and colorful photos to keep your preschooler’s attention while reading about fireworks, parades, and picnics!

Your preschooler will likely have fun learning about his country’s history and the story behind some of the fun traditions he takes part in on Independence Day.  This list of books is just a small sample of what is available.  Pick out a few fun books and get ready to enjoy some reading with your favorite little human!
