The average attention span for concentration at the preschool age is less than 15 minutes. This of course means that some children can focus for longer than others, but many lose focus sooner. As adults we can easily lose patience when we can’t get our preschoolers to focus and concentrate! There are ways to get your child to pay attention and focus, and maybe even increase their attention span.
Keep it Simple
Keep your instructions concise and simple. Rather than giving a list of instructions, take one task at a time. If it’s clean-up time and your child is suddenly playing with toys when they were asked to clean up the playroom, it’s because they couldn’t focus on a single task. Try “go put all your toy cars away, then come back and I’ll tell you what’s next!”
Get on Their Level
Literally, kneel to their level and make eye contact when you give these specific and simple instructions. It’s more likely that a child will focus on you if you give attention to get attention. In education, this is also a great tip during a craft or an assignment. Discuss and engage with the child as they work on it. Ask questions and get on their level!
Monitor Screen Time
Studies have shown that taking a break from screens and getting lots of exercise and playing games or activities will actually increase a child’s attention span. Set time limits and expectations to avoid meltdowns after screen time.
Keep a Routine
Children need structure and knowing the routine of each day at home or in the classroom will help them to focus on what’s next once they complete a current task or activity. They may even be excited to complete something so they can move on!
