Introducing Fitness to Your Preschooler

Introducing Fitness to Your Preschooler

While preschoolers have a ton of energy to burn, many of them aren’t getting the exercise they need. It’s never too early to start implementing healthy habits with your child—the sooner the better! Here are ways to ensure that you and your preschooler both get the exercise and quality time you need.

Do It Together

If it’s hard finding time to exercise and spend time with the kiddos, kill two birds with one stone and get fit together. There are tons of resources online for mommy and me workouts, but you don’t have to get complicated to get in shape if that’s not your style. Walk the dog together, have a dance party, teach them how to do sit ups and push ups and jumping jacks, or just play tag. Every parent knows just how much of a work out it can be to chase around a preschooler!

Make It A Habit

The only thing harder than starting exercise is to make a habit out of it, so teach your preschooler early how to make good habits out of exercise. Pick a day where both you and your little one don’t have as much going on to regularly spend at least 30 minutes exercising together. You can still shake it up—try something new every week, or put a twist on a classic routine.

Make It Positive

Try not to talk about exercise as something to dread around your preschooler. Associating exercise with fun and excitement is important for young children, and they’ll pick up on whatever attitude you present about fitness as well as anything else. Get excited, and then get your kiddo excited to exercise!

Taking care of preschoolers can be a workout of its own, but your little ones will thank you for teaching them to love exercise when they’re older, and you’ll thank yourself for every time you got off the couch and had a fun, albeit sweaty and tiring, afternoon with your kiddo.
