Many families find the back to school season brings more activities and a more hectic schedule. Families with preschoolers may find this time of year to be more difficult. However, with a bit of planning, your family can be running like a well-oiled machine again.
Plan Ahead
Plan your family’s meals a week in advance. Once you have your meals planned, create a grocery list and a list of any other errands you need to complete for the week. Designate a day to complete grocery shopping and errands for the week and plan your route ahead of time to cut down on time spent driving. By having meals planned and groceries purchased, you will be less likely to feel panicked when it is meal time.
Daily Schedule
Consider the events and tasks which occur during your day. Plan a schedule to ensure your family has time to accomplish everything needed in a day. Children typically like to stay in bed as long as possible and are slow moving in the morning, so plan a little extra time in their mornings to avoid hectic mornings. Set aside ample time each day for your preschooler to spend playing. Playing is how preschoolers learn, so provide plenty of playtime in their day! Preschoolers also need lots of sleep, so be sure to plan your preschooler’s bedtime early enough that they get ample sleep.
Child Friendly Schedule
Create a schedule for your preschooler to utilize. This will help your preschooler know what to expect and may help build responsibility. A visual schedule with pictures works well for preschoolers, since they are not reading yet.
Be Flexible
After planning your family’s daily schedule, try it out for a week. You may find you need to tweak a few things to make the schedule work better. Be kind to yourself and remember that life with a preschooler cannot be planned perfectly. Embrace every moment and enjoy your preschooler!
Shared Calendar
Create a shared calendar for the entire family to keep track of events. Place a calendar in a convenient place in your home. Some busy families color code the calendar with each family member using a specific color (i.e. green for Sarah, orange for Jacob, etc.) or a different color for different activities (i.e. blue for school events, pink for sport events, etc.).
