Helping Your Preschooler Grow Up to Be a Lifelong Reader

Helping Your Preschooler Grow Up to Be a Lifelong Reader at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen, preschool, daycare, childcare

With all the pressure to turn a preschooler into a lifelong reader, what is a parent to do? How much stress should a preschool parent endure to make sure their preschooler grows up to be a successful reader? Here is the good news: there are ample ways to help your preschooler along their reading path without having additional parental stress!

Keep the reading process low-key with your preschooler!

First things first—parents do not need to push all the phonics rules on their preschooler while doing read-alouds at home. Books are designed to be for pure pleasure and topical learning. Whenever possible, try to find books on topics that naturally intrigue your preschooler (whales, airplanes, cats, etc).

Use alphabet practice books with your preschooler.

Learning the basic letter awareness helps set up your preschooler for reading success down the road. There are plenty of thematic library books that help teach letter recognition. Authors, Samantha R. Vamos and Ryan O’Rourke, use the following topical books to teach letter awareness.

  • Alphabet Trains
  • Alphabet Boats
  • Alphabet Trucks

Take your preschooler to the library often!

Using the library as a free resource can open up your preschooler’s eyes to the joy and learning found in books. The possibilities are endless for what your child can learn at the library. In the eyes of your child, this can bring out the power of books and help your child desire to continue to appreciate the excitement of becoming a reader.

Use technology in your favor.

You and your preschooler can set up a “video chat family reading time” with a grandparent or special adult friend. That special adult can read a book via video chat to get a fresh voice reading to your child.

These above ideas are stress-free and do not require much preparation. Keeping it light-hearted at this stage can help spark a love of books in your preschooler that will not be easily extinguished.
