Making Time Change Easier for Your Preschooler

Making Time Change Easier for Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen, preschool, daycare, childcare

It is almost time (once again!) to change the clocks. For some, the extra daylight is worth it in the end, but for others, springing forward (or backwards for that matter) is a time of dread. Thankfully, there are a few ways to help you make time change easier for your preschooler this year.

Ease into the time change.

If you desire to get your preschooler on track in small increments before time change even takes place, you can use a 6–8-day transition time. Here is how these time frames can work. For a six-day incremental approach, you can start the process six days before time changes. Every two days, you will put your child to bed twenty minutes sooner. For an eight-day transition, begin your process eight days before time changes. Every two days, you will put your preschooler to bed fifteen minutes earlier. Slow and steady will win this race.

Use light to your advantage.

No matter if you go cold turkey or ease your preschooler into the time change, dim your child’s lights 30-60 minutes before bedtime. Plus, do not use technology within that same timeframe. Then, each morning, expose your child to as much light as possible. These help with natural sleep-wake cycles

Make exercise a priority!

During the week of time change (or at least on the day that you implement any change), give your preschooler additional opportunities for good exercise. This will help your child to fall asleep easier when you are trying to get them in bed sooner.

Give grace!

Remember to give grace to your preschooler and yourself! Everyone may be a bit on the cranky side when there is a change in pattern.

Your philosophy on prepping for time change may be different than your friend’s ideas, and that is okay! Do what feels right for you and your family. Your preschooler will find a way to adapt, and one day soon, things will become “normal” again.
