Ways to Help Your Preschooler Make Friends

Ways to Help Your Preschooler Make Friends at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen, preschool, daycare, childcare

Most parents relish in seeing their preschooler play happily with a friend or two. These same parents rightfully desire to see their child continuously learn to build good friendships. Here are some ways to help your preschooler make friends.

Use role play.

Using your preschooler’s favored toy(s), role play and model how to be a good friend. For example, use dolls or Lego people in a made-up situation to show your child how to share in a new environment or around a new child. You could ask your preschooler’s teacher if there are specific areas in which your child needs additional practice.

Read your child specific books.

Your public library or favorite bookstore may have the “You Choose” book series. These are good option books for your child to see specific examples of how to (and how not to) treat others. Lisa Regan has written Wait Your Turn, Tilly: Be Patient. Your child can literally choose the best option in several different real-life “kid situations.”

Another good book is called Ping by Ani Castillo. It shows the back and forth of friendship and treating others well.

Encourage empathy.

Though most children naturally have tender hearts, all children can learn to think about how their actions impact others. For example, in the natural flow of conversation if you know there is a new student in your child’s class, you could ask your child something like, “How would you feel if you were new to school in the middle of the year?” You could then ask, “If you were new, how would you hope that your classmates would treat you?”

Whether introverted or extroverted, children desire someone to befriend them. Hopefully some of these above strategies will help get your child’s wheels spinning on how to make and be a good friend.
