Back-to-school—some people love it, others dread it! No matter what side you are on, we can all agree that things go better when there is a set routine. Preschoolers thrive on routines, so here are some things to consider while establishing yours.
Preschoolers need between 10-13 hours of sleep every 24-hour period. This includes overnight and naps. If your child’s school has nap time, coordinate his rest/nap time at home to help his body adjust to the new schedule. Deduct the nap time from the time they need to sleep overnight and then set a bedtime and wake up time that will give them plenty of rest and plenty of time to get ready for school in the mornings. Start the new school routine a couple weeks before heading back and stick to it!
It is highly likely that breakfast and lunch times during school will differ from the times your preschooler eats during the summer. If you need to feed your toddler breakfast at home, factor that time into the morning routine. Also, find out what time your child will eat lunch at school so they can get used to eating at that time before going back to the classroom. Same goes with snack times.
Mornings can be hectic and rushed, so do as much as you can the night before. Then, be sure to wake up on time and get used to being dressed, making the bed, eating, brushing teeth, and gathering needed supplies on time. It is helpful to prepare as much as you can the night before to keep your mornings as stress-free as possible! Once your toddler gets into the habit of doing all the necessary things, mornings will go much smoother and getting to school on time should be an attainable goal!
