Books to Read with Your Preschooler During Black History Month

Books to Read with Your Preschooler During Black History Month at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen, preschool, daycare, childcare

Every February we take the opportunity as a nation to honor some special people who have helped shape our nation. Immediately you may think of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, and even Oprah. While some of the things these individuals accomplished during their lives may be hard for a preschooler to grasp, there are countless books about these individuals (and so many others) that easily bring their stories to our youngest learners. Here are just a few samples of books that you might want to introduce to your children this month.

Our Legendary Ladies Presents Harriet Tubman

By Megan Callea

This board book is perfectly suited for little hands! Geared at ages birth to age 3, this book keeps it simple and is easy for little ones to enjoy!

The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Johnny Ray Moore

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a force of nature who forever changed the way our country dealt with race. This book is geared for 2-5 year olds and tells the story of Dr. King’s life starting in his childhood. The beautiful pictures are sure to capture your child’s eyes!

Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World’s Fastest Woman

By Kathleen Krull

Someone whom you may not have heard of before, Wilma Rudolph overcame paralyzation in her leg due to polio and went on to be the first woman in America to be a three time gold medalist in a single olympiad.

Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race

By Margot Lee Shetterly

Your preschooler may not be ready to watch the movie based on these women, but this book puts the story of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden into a story form that your little one is sure to enjoy! Defying all odds and societal norms, these women literally helped put us in space!

These are just a few examples of the dozens and dozens of African American leaders that you can introduce to your child. Use their stories to inspire your preschooler to reach for their dreams and make a positive difference in this world!
