For preschoolers, every change in their environment is a great learning opportunity. While many adults may not even think about the changes in seasons, it’s actually a very enjoyable and exciting concept for small children. There is much to learn when it comes to changes in weather, and this learning opportunity is also a great way to have fun with your child.
Start with the basics
The simplest way to introduce seasons to your child is to point out the differences in weather as you come across them. When picking out their clothes in the morning, talk to them about why they’re going to wear a sweater or rain boots. Have simple conversations like, “Today it will be hot, so we will wear shorts and sandals,” or “It looks like it might rain today, so we will bring the umbrella with us.”
Go out and investigate
There’s nothing like first hand observation when it comes to learning! Acknowledging all the changes in your yard is the best way to open your child’s eyes to the seasons. Talk about the differences between dark heavy clouds and light fluffy ones and explain why they look that way. Ask your little one questions like “Why do you think leaves change colors in the fall?”
Hands on
You can use the seasons as a reason to do some new activities that also get your children to use their senses with the seasons. Make cotton ball art to depict fluffy clouds and snow, or play in the fall leaves, or make a wreath for the front door.
Safety
It’s also important to discuss safety when it comes to weather. Talk about hurricane and tornado safety and show them where flashlights and safety points in the house are. Use every opportunity to teach your child about nature while making it fun for the whole family—your child will grow up to love the changing seasons and always interact with the world around them.
