Valentine’s Day is all about love – and sugar! While your preschooler may be getting excited about all the candy and chocolate hearts they know is coming with the next holiday, there are still lots of crafty and educational ways to celebrate this special day with your special kiddo!
Use some of these ideas to incorporate learning objectives of math, literacy, and art into the day when we celebrate how much we can love others!
Math
Little ones learning to count will have great fun separating out candy hearts and counting the colors! How many are pink? How many are orange? How many can they sneak away and eat? Addition and subtraction with these yummy, annual treats are a fun way to sneak in some counting and color identification skills into Valentine’s Day activities.
Literacy
Older preschoolers may be learning how to write their names and the names of their classmates, so this is a perfect opportunity to practice writing “I Love ____” and fill in the blank with the names of their family members and friends. Make a Love Book out of hearts with these sentimental statements written on them, and keep it as a reminder of how much love is in your child’s life.
Art
Handmade Valentine’s Cards are a perfect way to entertain your preschooler on a chilly February day while also encouraging creativity and improving on some fine motor skills (like cutting and gluing). Get out all of your construction paper, glitter, buttons, ribbon, paper plates, anything you have on hand that’s crafty, and help your child make completely original and creative Valentines to give away.
Since this is a special holiday for loving friends and family, make sure to sneak in some hugs and words of love when doing all of these heart-happy activities!
