Practicing Thankfulness with Your Preschooler

Thankfulness with Preschoolers

Every year as November rolls around, our thoughts turn toward Thanksgiving and thankfulness. This makes it super easy for you to instill and/or reinforce the concept with your preschooler!

Make manners mandatory

From an early age, model good manners for your child. Let him see Mommy and Daddy saying “please” and “thank you” to each other and to him. When he is able to speak, insist that he use these words when asking and receiving things. A silly, but easy way to do this is to say, “My ears don’t work until they hear your manners. What did you say?” When he asks politely, respond quickly to reinforce his good manners.

Reinforce through reading

Find some good childrens’ books to help illustrate the necessity of thankfulness. Stories are often a gentle way to approach a topic. After reading some stories, help your preschooler apply what he learned to himself. Help him think of people who offer valuable services to him and how he can thank them for those services (mom, dad, teacher, etc.). Help your preschooler make a list of what he is thankful for, and display it where he can see it. Adding some pictures or drawings next to the items can help pre-readers be able to “read” the list for themselves.

Contribute to the cause

Have your child be a contributor to the family by way of chores. This will give him a sense of responsibility and belonging. He is now a contributing member of the family—which makes him very important! Be sure to thank him for his time and effort in serving the family through chores. Be generous with your praise for a job well done in order to encourage more in the future. Giving preschoolers opportunities to serve others lays a foundation of service and selflessness that you can build upon as he grows! Feeling appreciated by others will help him understand how others want to feel appreciated, too!
