Healthy Breakfast Ideas for Preschoolers

Healthy Breakfast Ideas for Preschoolers

It’s difficult to eat healthy as an adult, and it can be even more difficult to encourage your preschooler to sacrifice a sweet tooth for healthful foods. Even more difficult still is encouraging your child to eat right at breakfast—a meal often skipped by a large portion of adults. There are, however, some simple choices you can make to get your preschooler eating a healthy breakfast that will propel them into a productive day. Here’s our list of healthy breakfast ideas for preschoolers:

Choose whole grain wheat products

This one is something of a cliché at this point, but it’s important to look for whole grain wheat products when picking carbs for breakfast. This doesn’t just mean the sliced bread for toast. Check the packaging of your cereal, waffles, and pancakes for the chance to buy healthier options. If your child starts eating whole grains early, there’s a better chance they won’t get hooked on the fattier, sweeter white breads for life.

Get fruity

Kids roll their eyes at vegetables for dinner. For breakfast, get them pumped up with some sweet fruits. Strawberries, bananas, apples, tangerines, pineapples, blackberries and much more make for an enticing produce selection that won’t leave your preschooler with a bland taste in their mouth. Plus, many of these fruits go well with cereal and other breakfast items. Quick tip:if you want to go with more bland vegetables like celery or carrots, throw in peanut butter or hummus for dipping to add a punch of flavor that won’t pack on the calories.

Believe in yogurt

A preschooler can’t have cake or ice cream for breakfast, no matter how much they plea for it. However, a quick cup of yogurt for breakfast gives a kick of cool sweetness they can’t get much anywhere else. If your preschooler complains about the taste of basic vanilla Greek yogurt, try adding in some honey or stirring in diced fruit like strawberries. What’s more, you could go all the way with a fruit, yogurt and granola parfait! Make one yourself at home, or find a parfait on many fast food menus for a guilt-free breakfast packed with fiber, nutrients and lots of great taste!
