How Proper Nutrition Translates to Success in Preschool

How Proper Nutrition Translates to Success in Preschool at Kids 'R' Kids Greatwood, preschool, daycare, childcare

You have probably heard that nutrition is important for learning. Does good nutrition really affect your preschooler, though? Here are four thoughts on how proper nutrition really can translate to success in preschool:

Keep it low sugar

Perhaps you have seen your preschooler experience a “sugar rush” after a holiday. It is true; sugar affects a child’s hyperactivity level. Add preschool to the mix, and a child who has too much sugar in the system will struggle to stay calm and pay attention well during class. On the other hand, a preschooler will have more success in preschool when they do not have to work as hard to focus in the first place.

Incorporate omega-3 fats

For your preschooler, there are scientific benefits to incorporating omega-3 fatty acids in your child’s diet. Healthful fatty foods like nuts, seeds, and fatty fish can aid in your child’s healthy brain development.

Guard against unhealthy dental problems

This WebMD article states that a good diet can help keep away unwanted problems from your child’s mouth. Specifically, carbohydrates from unhealthy foods like candies and sweets can lead to tooth decay. Tooth pain or decay can cause educational gaps because a child in pain will struggle to pay attention in class. On the other hand, snack options like cheese and nuts better protect your preschooler’s enamel.

Use children’s books to assist you in teaching proper nutrition

There are a variety of helpful children’s books designed to help get your child on board to eat healthier. (After all, eating healthy can mean missing less school due to sickness.) Here are two book ideas:

  • “Eat Your Greens, Goldilocks” by Steve Smallman (for 2-6 year olds)
  • “Good Enough to Eat” by Lizzy Rockwell (for 3-8 year olds)

Nutrition does not have to equal stress. No one expects parents to give their preschooler a constantly “perfect” set of foods! A reasonable goal can be to make small changes, and to help your preschooler learn about the importance of nutrition along the way.
