Common Fears Your Preschooler May Have and How to Deal with Them

Common Fears Your Preschooler May Have and How to Deal with Them at Kids 'R' Kids Greenwood, preschool, childcare, daycare

Parents and preschoolers share something in common. Each has particular fears in life, which can be stressful to all. Preschooler’s fears can often stem from overly-active imaginations (which thankfully will one day balance out).  Here are some common fears that your preschooler may have and some strategies on how to deal with the fears.

Common Fears

Any preschooler could technically fear anything at any given time. As mentioned above, a preschooler’s imagination can be a bit too active at times, causing a wide variety of “what-ifs” in your child’s mind. Common fears may be:

  • Storms
  • Dogs (or a variety of animals)
  • The dark
  • Monsters
  • Being in front of a big group (or on stage)
  • The unknown

Strategies to Help

  1. Books like “Superheroes Don’t Get Scared…or Do They?” (Zack Bush and Laurie Friedman) and “The I’m Not Scared Book” (Todd Parr) help children to see that fears are okay and normal and that there are ways to work through their fears.
  2. Teach your preschooler to come to you when they experience fears. A preschooler will find relief that they can trust you with their fears.
  3. Encourage discussion with your preschooler to come up with specific ways to help in their fear. For example, if your preschooler is afraid of dogs, see if your child would be willing to read a book about dogs and learn how to practice safety around the dogs.
  4. Use child-friendly (and matter-of-fact) phrases when your child is in the middle of fear. For example, you could say, “Momma (or daddy, grandma, fill-in-the-blank) would never let a monster enter this house! I love you too much to let a monster go under your bed!”

Remember that your preschooler will mature in their thinking as they age. Their imaginations will not always get the best of them. Until that point, your preschooler will find comfort in your understanding and empathetic love.
