Traveling with Preschoolers During the Winter

Traveling with Preschoolers During the Winter at Kids 'R' Kids Greatwood, preschool, daycare, childcare

Winter travel brings new obstacles and adventures that other seasons do not have. Cold weather can be fun but also dangerous if one is not prepared. Here are some travel tips to make winter travel safer and possibly more enjoyable for you and your preschooler.

Watch the Weather

To begin with, know the weather of your destination and the area in between it and where you are beginning your trip. Use that information to pack what is needed. Items to consider packing are hats, scarves, warm coats, mittens, snow suits, and snow boots.

Layer Up

Layers are important for winter travel. Select clothing that can be layered. Layer your preschooler in one more layer than you would comfortably wear. The base layer needs to be a moisture wicking layer. Avoid cotton because cotton will keep your preschooler wet. The middle layer’s job is to retain heat and warmth. The final layer is ideally waterproof and needs to protect against the wind and snow. Though layers are important to have, do not dress your preschooler in layers for travel in your car. He could easily become too hot. Dress him in comfortable clothing for the ride to your destination.

Snacks

Preschoolers enjoy snacks. While snacks are fun, be careful to provide a balance of options that will not give your preschooler a bellyache. Try to select snacks that will not make a difficult mess in your vehicle. If possible, let your preschooler help make some snack suggestions when shopping for the trip.

Entertainment

Preschoolers also enjoy toys. It is fun to find a new toy or two for a trip. The novelty of a new toy could provide an increase of self-entertainment distraction for your preschooler, but also grab some older but loved toys for entertainment.  A few toy ideas are coloring books, reading books, lacing cards, Water Wow painting, cars, and dolls.

Master Plan

The keys to winter travel with a preschooler are planning for the worst but hoping for the best, and taking frequent breaks. Also be sure to have a backup plan in case things hinder the original plan. With a little extra planning and preparation, traveling in cold weather can still be a fun experience for the whole family.
