Preschooler Safety on Halloween

Trick-or-treating on Halloween is an exciting activity for your preschool monsters! This Halloween, make sure to take certain precautions to ensure their safety and fun. Follow these safety tips with your preschoolers for a night of fun and fright!

Trick-or-treat in groups and with adults! Trick or treating is fun when your preschooler can travel from house to house with neighborhood and school friends. Make sure there are plenty of adults to keep children corralled and together.

Help your preschooler select costumes which are bright or have reflective fabric. Decorate treat bags with reflective stickers and glow in the dark paint to ensure your preschooler can be seen in the dark.

Take photos of your preschoolers dressed in their costumes so you know what each child is wearing and remember to count your group often to make sure everyone stays together.

Check candy and toys for safety hazards: unwrapped candy, hard candy, and choking hazards. Make sure to remove items that may cause problems for your preschooler. Be extra cautious with homemade treats. Only accept homemade treats from neighbors you know.

Go over the rules with your preschoolers. Remind them to stay together, never to cross in the middle of the street, and to be respectful to neighbors and other trick-or-treaters.

Illuminate your jack-o-lantern with LED tea lights instead of candles. LED tea lights will be a safe option for your porch when you have many young preschoolers coming to your door to trick-or-treat. If pumpkins get knocked over, you won’t have to worry about a candle!

If you are passing out candy, keep your front porch well-lit for young children and the comfort of other parents. Pass out glow sticks, along with candy and treats, so that children will be easily seen as they trick-or-treat through your neighborhood! With these tips, everyone is guaranteed to have a safe, fun Halloween night!
