Setting Goals with Your Preschooler (Self Improvement Month)

With September comes National Self-Improvement Month—a time to examine yourself and try to make a better you! And even though your preschooler is young, he or she can still get in on the action and work on setting achievement goals for the new school year. Here are some pointers on how to start turning your child into a driven, goal-oriented preschool student:

Start with small goals

What can your child accomplish this week to get him or her in the routine of completing goals and tasks? Start with something like cleaning a play area, finishing a book or choosing an outfit for school. Achieving a quick goal can give your preschooler a BIG boost of confidence.

Share with your child

Chances are your child looks up to you a lot right now. Some of their greatest inspiration can come from learning by example from you. Tell your preschooler about some of your big goals for this year. Do any of these aspirations involve activities you can do with your child?

Get planning

Find a big goal—maybe not as huge as a New Year’s Resolution, but something fun and time-consuming to focus on over the last few months of the year. Now start making visual representations of how that goal can be achieved. Some people prefer vision boards, others may want to make a graph or timetable. If nothing else, sit down and make a “bucket list” for the next few months and actively work on those achievements.

Be there for your preschooler

Finally, make sure you are an active presence in your preschooler’s goal seeking. Don’t do their homework for them, but keep an eye out and always try to put some positive reinforcement behind them. As a parent, it’s also important to give your preschooler a much-needed reality check with some goals that are out of the question, but always do so with encouragement. Your child can and should shoot for the stars!
