What to Look for in a Preschool

There are so many options when it comes to selecting a preschool for our children! We want them to be safe, but we also want them to have fun and learn when we drop them off for school each day. Check out our list of what to look for in a preschool to make sure it will be a good match for your family!

1. Number of Children and Staff

The staff to child ratio will help you understand the size of the school and of each class. Look for a smaller class size if your child might need or want extra help or attention. Larger classes will be fine for a child who thrives in a busy environment. Take a gauge on the staff and teachers when you are visiting to make sure they seem nice and friendly.

2. Safety

Making sure our kids are safe while they are at school is a top priority. Check that the preschool is current on all their licenses and certifications. If your child has an allergy, make sure the school will make accommodations for them.

3. Schedule

There are many types of schedules to choose from for preschool! Consider whether you would like your child to go to school every day or every couple days and if you would like for them to be there for a full or half day. Look into whether or not they offer naptime and recess, along with what kind of curriculum they use for teaching, if any. Finally, see if the school offers early drop off or late pickup if you will need to take advantage of that.

4. Reputation

Talking to neighbors and friends, along with online reviews, will help you get a parent’s opinion of the school. When considering reviews, make sure to keep in mind that not everyone will agree with your decision and that’s okay! Make a decision that fits you and your family above all else.

5. Curriculum

Each school might have a different approach to how they teach, but it’s important that they challenge your preschooler academically, socially and emotionally. Schools that incorporate advanced technology, various extracurricular activities, and hands-on learning will prepare your child for kindergarten while incorporating plenty of fun!

Picking a preschool can feel overwhelming, but if you find a place your child loves and you feel comfortable leaving them each day, you can’t go wrong!

There are countless factors to consider when looking for the right preschool. Use our Comparison Checklist to cover all of your bases and make the right decision for you and your family!
