Why Parents Should Not Keep Their Children from Attending Preschool

Preschool Benefits

You might think that your child’s education really starts with kindergarten, but preschool is a truly essential part of their development. Many parents choose to wait until kindergarten, or teach their child at home, due to the cost of preschool programs and the feeling that their child isn’t yet ready for school. But preschool provides children with a jump-start on skills that are crucial to their development. Here are three reasons why you should not keep your children home during this critical time.

1.Your Child Will Be Less Prepared for Kindergarten

Kindergarten is just coloring and recess, right? Wrong. These days, kindergarten is more academic than ever. The kids that went to preschool got a head start on language, math, and literacy skills – which means your child is behind before they even got started. Children develop rapidly between the ages of three and five, so it’s important to take advantage of this time to begin their education.

Preschool offers pre-math, pre-literacy, language, and cognitive education in a fun and nurturing environment. This prepares them for the more formal education which begins with kindergarten. Unless you are a certified educator, teaching your child at home during the pre-kindergarten stage is not recommended. Preschool also prepares your child socially and emotionally, encouraging them to interact with others and learn to resolve conflicts.

2. Your Child Will Experience More Difficulty with Separation Anxiety

Preschool programs also encourage children to learn to make their own choices and take care of themselves independently. Could they still learn this in kindergarten? Sure, but it will become more of an issue than it needs to be. Starting with kindergarten, teachers are primarily responsible for the education of 20 to 30 students, rather than the development of each individual.

Delaying this critical aspect of your child’s development may cause them to become more dependent on you and will make that first day of kindergarten harder for everyone, including you, your child, the teacher, and every other child in the classroom.

3.Your Child Will Have More Trouble with Structure and Rules

Preschool programs provide structure, but at a gentler level than primary school. Yes, your child has structure at home, but they are used to you, as the parent, providing that structure. Suddenly, they are in a classroom with a stranger, being told where to sit, when to eat, and how to fill their day

As we mentioned above, without the gentle encouragement of a preschool program, your child may be more dependent on you than they should be, and rebel against the new rules in the classroom. You can nip it all in the bud by allowing a preschool program to teach your child a little bit of independence
