Fireworks, family picnics, and a whole lot of red, white, and blue…there’s nothing quite like the Fourth of July! Your preschooler may be wondering how Independence Day came to be and why exactly we celebrate patriotism, so continue reading for tips on how to teach your child all about the Fourth of July.
The Declaration of Independence
On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was created to separate the thirteen American colonies from Great Britain, breaking them from their obligation to follow the rules of the king of Great Britain. Fifty six men signed the Declaration that day, and thus, Independence Day was born!
The American Flag
Your preschooler may also be curious about the American flag, what it symbolizes, and how it ties into patriotism. The fifty states in our nation are represented through the flag’s fifty stars, while the thirteen red and white stripes represent the thirteen colonies that existed when the Declaration of Independence was signed. For this reason, many view the American flag as a patriotic symbol, standing for the rights and freedoms that Americans have.
Patriotic Activities
Consider trying one of these fun and festive activities to get your little one excited about Independence Day:
- Have a patriotic pool day! With fun music, festive floaties, and delicious food, you can soak in the summer sun and celebrate Independence Day by the water.
- Bake a Fourth of July cake! You can model your cake after the American flag or get creative with red, white and blue icing. Pick up patriotic sprinkles and frosting at your local grocery store and bake the day away.
- Many neighborhoods host bike parades on this festive holiday, so why not have a family bike decorating party? Break out the red, white, and blue streamers and stickers and ride through the neighborhood altogether!
Remember the brave men and women who fought for our freedoms as you enjoy Independence Day with your loved ones this month!
