At this age, children begin to notice feelings, fairness, and friendship, making early childhood the perfect time to nurture gentle hearts. Families and teachers can guide preschoolers through everyday lessons that show kindness matters just as much as academics.

Preschoolers are natural imitators. The way adults speak and act sets the tone for how children interact with others. When families say “thank you,” lend a hand to a neighbor, or show patience in traffic, little eyes are watching and learning. Teachers who greet each child warmly or take time to comfort a child who is upset demonstrate that caring is the expectation, not the exception. Modeling kindness in daily routines lays a foundation for empathy that lasts.

It’s not enough to simply tell children to be nice—they need opportunities to practice kindness. Small, hands-on activities give preschoolers a chance to put empathy into action. At home, families might let a preschooler help set the table, pack a sibling’s backpack, or water the neighbor’s flowers. When kindness happens, it deserves attention. Positive reinforcement helps preschoolers understand that kind actions are valued. A “kindness jar” filled with pom-poms for every kind deed, or a family chart with stickers for kind words, keeps kindness visible and fun. Verbal encouragement matters, too. When children hear, “That was so thoughtful when you shared your toy,” they connect the action with pride and belonging.
