Preschoolers are naturally full of wonder—and winter is the perfect season to help them discover that families around the world celebrate in many different ways. Creating a “Preschooler Passport” is a simple and fun way to introduce your little learner to global holiday traditions. All you need is some imagination, a few simple craft supplies, and a spirit of curiosity!

Holidays to Highlight

  • Hanukkah (Jewish tradition): Light paper candles on a homemade menorah, spin a dreidel, and taste applesauce with your snack. Talk about the meaning of each candle and how Hanukkah lasts for eight nights. Preschoolers can practice counting candles and matching colors. Families might also enjoy listening to a Hanukkah song or reading a simple holiday story together.
  • Christmas (Christian tradition): Decorate a mini tree, read global Christmas stories, and talk about traditions in countries like Germany, Mexico, or Australia. Encourage preschoolers to create their own ornaments using craft materials. Sing a familiar carol and talk about the themes of giving and kindness. You could also set up a pretend gift-wrapping station for dramatic play.
  • Lunar New Year (Asian tradition): Create red lanterns, learn to say “Happy New Year” in Mandarin (“Xīnnián kuàilè!”), and make dragon puppets. Practice a simple dragon dance with scarves or streamers to celebrate. Talk about the animal of the year and let preschoolers draw or color their own version. You can also read a Lunar New Year story and wish each other good luck for the year ahead.

Make It Fun and Interactive

Your child’s “passport” can be a folded piece of paper with stamps or stickers added each time you “visit” a new country. Use music, dress-up, snacks, and crafts to make each stop feel exciting. Incorporate pretend play—let your child “stamp passports” or serve snacks from each country. Invite siblings or friends to join the journey for even more fun and learning. Let your child lead with questions and creativity—how would they celebrate?
