As the leaves turn and the weather cools, fall becomes the perfect season to help preschoolers reflect on all they’re thankful for. One engaging way to do this is with a family gratitude tree—a simple but meaningful activity that blends creativity, conversation, and connection.

Create the Tree Together

Start by drawing or crafting a tree trunk using paper, felt, or cardboard. Then, invite your preschooler to help you cut out colorful leaves. You can use autumn shades like red, orange, and yellow—or get creative with sparkle paper and fun shapes! Each day, ask your child what they’re thankful for and write their response on a new leaf. If they can’t write yet, let them draw a picture of their idea or tell you what to write. Their answers might range from “my puppy” to “cookies” to “hugging my brother.”

Let your child decorate the leaves with stickers or doodles—it gives them a sense of ownership and pride. Soon, your tree will bloom with a variety of sweet, heartfelt reflections.

Turn It Into a Daily Family Ritual

Preschoolers love routines, and a daily moment of thankfulness is a powerful way to build positive thinking habits. Try making this part of your wind-down routine—before bath time or bedtime. You can even include the whole family! Let siblings or grown-ups add their own leaves too, modeling gratitude in action.

As the days go on, your preschooler will start looking for things to be thankful for, both big and small. That mindset helps develop empathy, emotional intelligence, and joy.

Celebrate the Season of Thanks

Fall is full of opportunities to slow down and reflect. Creating a gratitude tree not only strengthens family bonds—it also helps preschoolers learn to notice and appreciate the good around them.
