Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Charlotte, preschool, daycare, childcare

With preschoolers returning to the busier schedule of the school season, it is important to start them off with what is known as the most important meal of the day–breakfast! Research has shown that children who have a healthy breakfast are regularly better behaved and also achieve more at school. Help your preschooler put their best foot forward by participating in Better Breakfast Month!

There are many different ways to participate in Better Breakfast Month with your preschooler. Some ways may be easy options for you and your preschooler, but other ways might be more difficult or even improbable. Find ways that work best for you and jump in!

Talk About Food Groups

You and your preschooler could sit down and discuss the different food groups. These include protein, dairy, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Next, you could have various breakfast foods that your preschooler typically eats and have them help you identify which food groups their food contains. If they are missing food groups in their regular breakfast, brainstorm with them on what could be added to ensure they are having a healthy breakfast.

Breakfast Around the World

Another way to participate is through learning about different breakfasts that are eaten around the world. In Hungary, breakfast often includes pogácsa; whereas, Russians have syrniki or blini. Spaniards enjoy tortilla de patatas, and the British enjoy beans and, in some areas, black pudding. If you or your preschooler are adventurous, it might be fun to try out one of the new breakfasts that you learned about!

Put a Twist on Your Normal Breakfast

If another culture’s breakfast is not appealing, you could instead participate by working with your preschooler to try new traditional breakfast options. Take some time to sit down with your preschooler and put together a new menu of breakfast options: smoothies, breakfast cookies, breakfast bars, drinkable yogurt, French toast, pancakes or waffles, low sugar cereals, eggs, breakfast burritos or quesadillas, granola, oatmeal, baked oatmeal, overnight oats, homemade donuts, muffins, and fruit are some options to choose. Mix and match options to ensure you are meeting the requirements for each food group.

Participating in Better Breakfast Month could be a fun learning time with your preschooler. Establishing a routine now, at the beginning of the school year, will set you up for success in the weeks and months ahead. Plus, the habits learned at this young age could have lasting positive outcomes as school schedules become more demanding in the years to come.
