Childproofing Tips for New Parents

Childproofing Tips for New Parents at Kids 'R' Kids Charlotte, preschool, daycare, childcare

What is a new parent to do?! Is it possible to go overboard or underboard with protecting your child? Does a preschooler still need childproofing at home, or only a toddler? Childproofing depends much on the entirety of your home circumstances, your child’s distinct personality, and your individual parenting style. Below are a few basic childproofing tips for new parents.

Small Toys

Hopefully your friends and family will not buy any toys for your young baby that pose a choking hazard. If you have older children consistently at your house, make it a habit to have them be extra careful with their small toys when they are finished with them. Some curious preschoolers will still put new things in their mouths. Doing a “ground lookover” in the room your young child plays in is a good protective measure.

Kitchen Safety

You should store heavy pots, slow cookers, and appliances well out of reach of your child. A preschooler can reach for heavy items in the kitchen that can wind up falling on them. Be sure to warn young children when using the slow cooker that it can get very hot while it is in use.

Knobs and Locks

There is a huge variety of cabinet locks and door and stove knobs covers to keep children away from harm. You can even buy a toilet lock! There are sliding glass door and window locks and sensors to alert you if a young toddler or preschooler is opening something dangerous.

Vitamins and Medicine

Make sure that vitamins and medicines are in upper cabinets, well out of a child’s reach.

Bathtub Spout

Whether for a baby or preschooler, a bathtub spout cover can guard the child’s head during bathtub play.

The list could go on and on, but it really depends on your child’s age and—as mentioned before—the curiosity level! Do not be afraid to go “overboard” or “underboard.” You know what is best for your family.
