Unleash Your Preschool Child’s Inner Storyteller

Unleash Your Preschool Child’s Inner Storyteller at Kids 'R' Kids Charlotte, preschool, daycare, childcare

No child is too young to discover the love of writing. If your preschooler loves story time or has an active imagination, these activities will do wonders to instill the love of writing and storytelling that can possibly last them a lifetime.

Reading Time

For many children, the love of writing comes from the love of reading. Start having a regular time where you and your preschooler read together. You can even build a “Reading Corner” in your house with fun pillows and a bookshelf filled with your favorite books. When reading with your child, ask them at certain points what they think will happen next to encourage creativity and free thinking.

Trips to the Library

An important part in teaching your child about writing is encouraging them to learn about their preference in stories and genres. After finishing a story, ask your child what they loved most about it, and something they would change. Spend the afternoon at the library and look for books together—teach them to read the preview of the book and let them pick something out by themselves. You may be surprised at what they choose!

Regular Writing Exercises

Together, pick out a chapter book that you can read together—or any book that’s big enough for you to read over the course of a few days. At good stopping points, discuss with your child what they think is going to happen next. Talk about the similarities and differences in their version and the book—you’d be astonished what stories your child will create just out of these little discussions!

Give them their own journal

Making writing a special practice can change the way your child sees the writing process. Giving them a gift in the form a journal or diary can show your little one how valued their talents are—make it something specific to them by choosing one with their favorite color or character on the cover. Or you can let them decorate their journal themselves. Though they may be too young to write (and, therefore, you will have to write everything down for them) this special place to create new stories can be a fun way to express themselves and bond with you.

Let your child lead the way in their discovery to writing. If they want to spend most of their reading time talking about their own stories, put the book down and encourage their creative thoughts. There are no right or wrong ways to express yourself with storytelling!
