Independence Day with Preschoolers

Does your preschooler understand the meaning of the Fourth of July? Independence Day is always filled with fun, fireworks, and food, but it’s also the celebration of signing of the Declaration of Independence! Hundreds of years ago, that historic document was written and signed, and America was born! This year, help your preschooler understand the deeper meaning of this holiday by trying one of these ideas!

Honor those Serving

Although we celebrate so many freedoms in America today, men and women are still serving in the military to protect our freedoms. An easy way to honor those that are serving is to put together a care package and including a heartfelt letter acknowledging your appreciation. Check with a local military support group to make sure your care package is compliant, and then have fun filling a box to send with your little one.

Make a Flag

The flag is a symbol of our freedoms as Americans, and an easy way to help your little one to understand its meaning is to make a flag for themselves! Explain to them how the thirteen stars and stripes on the original flag represented the thirteen colonies. Help your child make their own flag on a piece of construction paper and allow them to hang it on the door or somewhere else prominent for the Fourth.

Show Gratitude Locally

While our government wasn’t actually formed yet, the Fourth of July is still a great time to celebrate local officials. Bake patriotic cookies with your preschooler to take to your local courthouse for the employees that work there. It’s always great to let people know you appreciate them, and the Fourth of July is a fitting time to celebrate public servants!

Make this Fourth of July the best yet by helping your preschooler understand the true meaning of the holiday!
